In chapter IV, Victor Frankenstein tells Captain Walton that he discovered the secret of animating that which is lifeless. Frankenstein refuses to divulge this secret, declaring, "I will not lead you on, unguarded and ardent as I then was, to your destruction and infallible misery" (31), foreshadowing the fact that this secret ends up destroying him and leading him to struggle with guilt and morality
